宰相與君王

《魔戒》小說裏面有不少人物在電影中被扭曲、「易容」，效果使人慘不忍睹。其中一個是 Faramir。最近重讀大衛與約拿單的故事，讓我想起 Faramir 與 Aragorn。

Aragorn 是剛鐸的真命天子、是 Isildur 唯一嫡系子孫 ；雖然他經年在外漂泊，但他是無以替代的王者。他是另一個被電影嚴重扭曲的人物，這要留待另一篇了。

在剛鐸長期沒有君王統治的年日裏，都由宰相負責攝政。與君王一樣，宰相也是世襲的；而到了魔戒故事發生的時候，宰相攝政已經是第廿六代。Faramir 正是當時剛鐸宰相的兒子，不過他只是次子，長子是 Boromir。 Boromir 是一個悲劇人物，電影對他算是忠於原著，儘管我還是嫌電影對他悲劇的一面未能表達完整。Boromir 從剛鐸千山萬水來到 Rivendell 是因為他在夢中聽到一段說話，要前來查明底蘊。這夢中預言是：
Seek for the Sword that was Broken,
　In Imladris it dwells;
There shall be counsels taken
　Stronger than Morgul-spells.
There shall be shown a token
　That Doom is near at hand,
For Isildur's Bane shall waken,
　And the Halfling forth shall stand.

當然，Boromir 來不是為了要解決心底這份疑慮，更不是為了要知道謎底那麼簡單。電影已經夠清楚，釋疑只是其中一個原因，更重要的原因是他想利用這件 Isildur's Bane。儘管他起初並不知道這究竟是甚麼一回事，但他甘願放下剛鐸的守護工作，搶著要來，因為他要出頭。Faramir 憶起兒時 Boromir 總因為自己並非君王之後而惱怒、抱怨："How many hundreds of years needs it to make a steward a king, if the king returns not?" Faramir 夠了解他："I can well believe that Boromir, the proud and fearless, often rash, ever anxious for the victory of Minas Tirith (and his own glory therein), might desire such a thing and be allured by it."

相對地，Faramir 完全不一樣。提到 Isildur's Bane，他說："I would not take this thing, if it lay by the highway. Not were Minas Tirith falling in ruin and I alone could save her, so, using the weapon of the Dark Lord for her good and my glory. No, I do not wish for such triumphs"。他的性格更是與 Boromir 相違："For myself, I would see... Minas Tirith in peace...War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory."

當他的父親仍然想與 Aragorn 爭長短之際，Faramir已經心裏有數，明白王者終於出現；當他終於遇上 Aragorn，他也打從心底心悅誠服，"he looked on Aragorn who bent over him; and a light of knowledge and love was kindled in his eyes, and he spoke softly: My lord, you called me. I come. What does the king command."。作為宰相最後繼承人，他沒有打算與 Aragorn 爭奪統治權，因為他已經知道，而且接受王者既已出現，就是他退回輔助角色的時候。

小說裏，Faramir 並不是平庸之輩，他滿有智慧、仁慈，而且紀律嚴明。他領軍的能力不遜於其兄，而他的部下對他的敬佩和愛戴更甚於其父，甚至為他願意捨身效命。他實在有能力、有把握可以令剛鐸上下對他效忠而與 Aragron 抗衡的。但他沒有這樣做。

要放棄已握在手的權力，並不是容易的事。就如 Faramir 的父親，儘管他知道 Aragorn 的存在，而且知道他正在前赴剛鐸途中，他卻越發緊抓著不願意放手。像 Faramir 這樣不奪取、不戀棧不屬於自己的權力，實在是罕有的。聖經裏的約拿單正是這樣的人物。

約拿單是掃羅王的長子、是王位的繼承人。但他知道神已另立大衛代替他父親作王，故此他甘心樂意輔助大衛。撒母耳記上23:15-18，這樣記載：「大衛知道掃羅出來尋索他的命，那時他住在西弗曠野的樹林裏。掃羅的兒子約拿單起身，往那樹林裏去見大衛，使他倚靠神得以堅固。對他說：不要懼怕，我父掃羅的手必不加害於你，你必作以色列的王，我也作你的宰相，這事我父掃羅知道了。於是二人在耶和華面前立約，大衛仍住在樹林裏，約拿單回家去了。」

約拿單不但承諾日後成為大衛的宰相幫助他，實際上從掃羅開始起意要殺害大衛時，約拿單就已經幫助大衛。他多次為大衛向掃羅說好話、又多次通知大衛逃命。到這一次，他更來「使他倚靠神得以堅固」，這一切雖因為他倆的友誼非比尋常，但也可以看出約拿單的胸襟、氣度，和他對權力的不留戀。這正是他父親掃羅做不到的。

《魔戒》裏面的 The One Ring 所代表的就正是這樣的一種令許多人眷戀、留戀，不願意放手，甚至要奪過來、據為己有的 power。
